Timothy Carter

Timothy Carter has performed in varied roles as an orchestral soloist, recitalist, orchestra member, and chamber musician throughout Europe, Asia, and The United States. He developed a fascination with classical music from an early age, which led to studies at The Juilliard School during his high school and college years. Throughout his years as a student, Tim performed at numerous venues and music festivals throughout the world, such as the Kyoto Japan International Music Students Festival, Lincoln Center Festival, Tanglewood, and Marlboro.  Upon finishing his studies in New York, Tim joined the Nagoya Philharmonic and performed throughout Japan as their Principal Clarinetist from 2007-2009.  During his time in Nagoya, he collaborated many times with members from The Vienna Philharmonic (Toyota Master Players) at Orchard Hall in Tokyo.

He has also played as a guest Principal clarinetist with many top Tokyo orchestras, including The New Japan Philharmonic Orchestra and The Kioi Sinfonietta Tokyo.  As a solo clarinetist, Tim has received top prizes and awards from high volume participant international music competitions in Japan and Europe, capturing the 2nd prize at Japan's 24th Wind and Percussion Competition “Kanda” in 2007, the 2nd prize at Germany's Freiburg International Music Competition in 2009, and a unanimous 1st Prize at Japan Clarinet Association’s “Japan Clarinet Competition” in 2012.

Recent concerts have included performances as a soloist and chamber musician throughout Japan, China, and The United States.  As a solo player, in addition to the standard classical clarinet repertoire, Tim is interested in developing multi-media performances and is also keen to create new arrangements for clarinet, based on inspiring and iconic classical works.  In 2016, he released his first solo album, “Clarinet Reinventions,” which is a compilation of new and familiar arrangements for the clarinet that quickly became popular throughout Japan.

Tim resides near Tokyo, Japan and teaches music classes and clarinet at international schools and is Assistant Professor of Clarinet at Obirin University in Tokyo.  Equally passionate about music education and fostering the dreams and growth of the next generation of musicians, Tim has taught abundantly at the university level, and master classes and clinics internationally, including at Kurashiki Sakuyo University, The British School in Tokyo, Kunitachi Ongakuin, and Nagoya University of the Arts.
